Anthony Joshua has been installed as the early 1/10 favourite with bookmakers BetVictor to beat Charles Martin for the IBF World heavyweight championship on April 9 at London’s O2 Arena.
Joshua, 26, is scheduled to contest his first world title in little under eight weeks time after promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed a deal has been struck to bring America’s latest heavyweight king over to the UK for his first defence.
The Olympic Gold medallist has accumulated a perfect record of 15-0 with 15 knockouts since turning professional in 2013. His most recent fight saw him stop bitter-rival Dillian Whyte in December in what was regarded his toughest test to date.
Joshua swallowed a number of clubbing blows in that encounter, but still came through with flying colours. It was a fight that will prepare him greatly for the tests that await during the remainder of his career.
Charles Martin (23-0-1 21KOs) won the vacant IBF crown last month when beating Vyacheslav Glazkov inside three-rounds after the Ukrainian was forced to retire with a serious knee injury.
The 29-year old immediately set his sights upon the biggest fights in the heavyweight division and has, as a result, selected the most lucrative by defending against Anthony Joshua.
Few will argue that Charles Martin is not amongst the best heavyweights in the world which could give the American a limited period with the IBF title. Taking this fight with Joshua gives Martin the opportunity to accumulate a significant purse as well as the chance to derail one of the biggest hype-trains in world boxing.
Whether he possesses the necessary artillery to do so is another matter as ‘AJ’ is as short as 1/5 with StanJames to KO the champion come April 9.
