Meydan – THURSDAY 8th FEBRUARY 2018
1000 Guineas sponsored by Friday Listed – 1m Dirt
After an excellent course win on her UAE debut this is set up nicely for WINTER LIGHTNING. Only ran twice and made a good debut in the UK. In the Godolphin first colours. A close second to Winter Lightning LTO was Rayya and will push the selection close again. The only other filly of interest, also in the Godolphin colours, is Flora Sanders. Makes UAE debut but the only filly in the race with a distance victory to her name.
Wheels Handicap – 1m1.5f Dirt
Sparring ran disappointingly on UAE debut as has some useful UK form prior. However that was over an inadequate trip and should improve for that run. Dehbashi very consistent sort and should not be far away again. Sea Skimmer has had a very good season but may prefer a shorter distance. ORMINDO is a very consistent 8yo and a course and distance winner. Should be fit to take this prize. Others to consider would be Mazeed and Bois De Boulogne.
Al Shindagha Sprint sponsored by gulfnews.com Group 3 – 6f Dirt
Last time out COMICAS put up an impressive display beating some old favourites in Muarrab, My Catch and Reynaldothewizard. Reasoanble form in the UK last summer and prior to that a good second in Group 1 race on World Cup night.
Watch Time Handicap – 5f Turf
May not require a lot of winning. HIT THE BID made a good start to his UAE career over course and distance and should improve from that run. The danger may come from Dutch Masterpiece, course and distance winner last time out and the Godolphin horse Kananee who disappointed on UAE debut but does have some useful UK form prior to that.
Al Maktoum Challenge R2 sponsored by Gulf News Group 2 – 1m1.5f Dirt
Heavy Metal two wins from two runs this season. Despite being a 8yo retains a lot of ability. Steps up in distance. Behind Heavy Metal last time out was THUNDER SNOW who was making his UAE seasonal debut. Has won two Group races over course and distance and will be expected to add to that. Others to contest the placings will be Second Summer, North America and Furia Cruzada.
Meydan Classic Trial sponsored by getthat.com Conditions – 7f Turf
Very difficult race to call. Difficult to split the two Godolphin horses. Racing Country made a very good start to his UAE career finishing second on dirt to a useful sort. Zaman makes his UAE debut but arrives on the back of a useful summer campaign in the UK. The two Kuwait owned horses have also had a good season to date although Waqqad did not follow up on his maiden win when beating stable companion Cozmo Star. UK trained ROLAND ROCKS ran a great race on his UAE debut on the dirt here and useful form in the UK suggests can come on for that race.
REACH by Gulf News Handicap 1m2f Turf
Godolphin have five runners in the final race and a case could be made for all of these runners. BANKSEA is in the first colours and looks the most likely winner. Good second over course and distance on UAE debut last time out. Leshlaa and Blair House will push the winner having both made encouraging UAE debuts over course and distance on the back of some useful UK form.
